In short

Marmoleum is Forbo's linoleum brand. Forbo's documents divide it into sheet collections, acoustic sheet, Modular tiles, Click panels and special grades for fire, slip, static control and sport.[1][2] According to Forbo's datasheets, reaction to fire is Cfl-s1 for most families and Bfl-s1 for FR.[2][3] According to Forbo's Marmoleum sheet EPD (23 March 2026), the A1–A3 carbon figure for 2.5 mm is negative. According to Forbo's Marmoleum Modular EPD (1 June 2023), it is positive.[4][5] For what linoleum is in general, see our page on linoleum flooring.

Most of what is written about Forbo Marmoleum treats it as a single product. Forbo's own documents show a range with different thicknesses, backings, use classes and declarations. This article sets out what those documents say, what independent bodies have certified, and where the record stops. Manufacturer statements are worded as claims.

What is in the Marmoleum range?

According to Forbo's Marmoleum brochure (2024), Marmoleum is its linoleum brand, grouped into collections: Solid, Marbled, Linear, Modular, Click and Sport, plus Furniture Linoleum, Bulletin Board and special acoustic and static-dissipative varieties.[1] According to the same brochure, Furniture Linoleum and Bulletin Board are surfacing for furniture and walls, not floors.[1] According to Forbo's Marmoleum sheet EPD, Marmoleum complies with EN-ISO 24011, whose scope covers plain and decorative linoleum as tiles or rolls and excludes PVC- or rubber-based coverings sold as linoleum.[4][6]

Marmoleum floor families as stated in Forbo documents (named in the Source column). Use classes are EN ISO 10874 domestic / commercial / light industrial.

Marmoleum Sport3.2 or 4.0 mm sheet, 2.0 m wide, up to 28 m rollsNot stated; the datasheet cites EN 14904Cfl-s1[15]

Three points separate the families beyond the table. First, construction differs. According to Forbo's Marmoleum sheet EPD, sheet sits on a woven jute backing. According to Forbo's Decibel EPD, Decibel adds a foam layer. According to Forbo's Modular EPD, Modular has a woven polyester backing.[4][11][5] According to Forbo's Marmoleum brochure, Click panels are made from a high-density fibreboard with a cork backing and a click system.[1] Second, natural content differs by datasheet. According to Forbo's Marbled datasheet, up to 98 % for sheet collections. According to its Modular datasheet, 92 %. According to its Decibel datasheet, 94 %. According to its FR datasheet, 70 %. According to its Soul datasheet, 99 %.[2][12][10][3][9] Third, according to Forbo's Soul datasheet (05/2026), Soul contains minimal to no added pigments, so colour may vary between production batches and with light exposure.[9]

According to Forbo's Marbled and Modular datasheets, slip resistance is R9 in the ramp test. According to Forbo's R10 datasheet, it is R10 for the R10 grade. According to Forbo's Marbled, Modular and R10 datasheets, the friction coefficient is at least 0.30 under EN 13893.[2][12][14] For Decibel impact sound reduction, according to Forbo's Decibel datasheet (04/2026) and Decibel EPD (23 July 2026), it is 19 dB.[10][11] According to Forbo's Marbled datasheet (02/2025) and Marmoleum brochure (2024), it is at least 18 dB.[2][1] EN ISO 10874, which defines the use classes, is a classification standard for resilient, textile and laminate floor coverings.[16]

What do the declarations and certificates say?

EPDs. Forbo publishes separate EPDs per family. According to Forbo's sheet, Modular, Decibel and Soul EPDs, each declares 1 m² of installed floor, sets the reference service life to one year, and has the external verification box ticked.[4][5][11][17] The A1–A3 global warming potential (GWP-total) per m² differs by EPD:

  • According to Forbo's Marmoleum sheet EPD (23 March 2026), sheet, 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.2 mm: −1.27 / −1.57 / −2.02 kg CO₂e. For 2.5 mm, fossil GWP is 2.83 kg and biogenic GWP is −4.40 kg.[4]
  • According to Forbo's Marmoleum soul EPD (23 March 2026), Soul, 2.5 mm: −1.68 kg CO₂e.[17]
  • According to Forbo's Marmoleum Decibel EPD (23 July 2026), Decibel, 3.5 mm: −1.10 kg CO₂e.[11]
  • According to Forbo's Marmoleum Modular EPD (1 June 2023), Modular, 2.5 mm: +0.395 kg CO₂e, with fossil GWP of 4.19 kg and biogenic GWP of −3.80 kg.[5] According to Forbo's Modular datasheet (09/2025), the declaration number is 4790690881.102.1.[12] According to Forbo's Modular EPD, it is 4790690881.102.2.[5]

According to Forbo's Marmoleum sheet EPD, it applies the EN 15804+A2 approach in which biogenic carbon taken up in A1–A3 is released at end of life. For 2.5 mm sheet, biogenic GWP in module C3/1 (100 % incineration) is +4.29 kg CO₂e.[4] The same EPD states that circularity has not yet been achieved on a large scale for floor coverings.[4] According to Forbo's Marmoleum brochure (2024), Marmoleum is "climate positive from cradle to gate, without offsetting", based on the 2.5 mm sheet EPD with declaration number 4790690881.101.1.[1] According to Forbo's Marmoleum Modular EPD (declaration number 4790690881.102.2), the A1–A3 total is positive.[5] According to Forbo's Marmoleum sheet EPD, it is not a comparative assertion.[4] On the basics of linoleum carbon, see our linoleum profile.

Each shows the status "LBC Red List Free".[30] According to Forbo's linoleum download page (read 8 October 2026), the Declare label for Marmoleum sheet has a 1 June 2026 expiry. According to the Declare database, Marmoleum Sheet expires 1 July 2027.[29][30]

Where is it used, and what are the limits?

Forbo's brochure speaks of schools, healthcare institutions, workplaces, leisure centres and living spaces.[1] By family, according to Forbo's Marmoleum brochure, Click can be used in professional environments and in the home, Sport suits general-purpose gym and sports halls, Ohmex suits computer and server rooms, and FR is for areas needing extended fire retardancy.[1] These are the manufacturer's statements of intended use. According to Forbo's Marbled and Click datasheets, Marmoleum is resistant to dilute acids, oils, fats and conventional solvents but not to prolonged exposure to alkalis.[2][13]

Limits as stated in Forbo's installation and care documents, each named below:

  • Subfloor and climate. According to Forbo's sheet installation note, the subfloor must be clean, smooth, sound and permanently dry, with moisture tests on all substrates. According to Forbo's Installation Guidance Note: Marmoleum sheet (01-2019), at least 18 °C for 48 hours before, during and after installation. According to Forbo's Installation Guidance Note: Marmoleum Modular (06-2019), 48 hours before, during and 24 hours after.[24][25]
  • Underfloor heating. According to Forbo's sheet installation note (01-2019), maximum substrate surface temperature of 27 °C in use, with the system turned off or set lowest for at least 48 hours before installation.[24]
  • Seams. According to Forbo's Marbled datasheet, net fit and welded seams are hygienic solutions. According to Forbo's sheet installation note (01-2019), seams cut too tight will peak, and this is not a product defect.[24][2]
  • First wash. According to Forbo's Floor Care: Marmoleum guide (04-2022), no wet cleaning within 3 days. According to Forbo's Installation Guidance Note: Marmoleum sheet (01-2019), 48 hours.[26][24]
  • Cleaning. According to Forbo's Floor Care: Marmoleum guide (04-2022), use a neutral cleaner, never high-pH chemicals, and no abrasive powders or brown or black pads. For stains, it says not to use highly alkaline products (ammonia, soda) or strong solvents such as acetone.[26] It also gives separate care advice for Ohmex and Sport.[26]

Two peer-reviewed papers address use and maintenance. A 1999 paper reused two case studies and found that for linoleum and vinyl the use-phase emissions were of much the same magnitude as those in the rest of the life cycle, and recommended counting them.[27] A 2002 life cycle assessment of linoleum, commissioned by Forbo-Krommenie, found that the type of maintenance and the pigments can have a large influence on results, and that data gaps could lead to an underestimate.[28] Neither abstract names a Marmoleum family.

What the sources do not tell us

  • Every wear, slip and indentation figure above comes from a Forbo datasheet, and we did not read the underlying test reports.
  • Forbo's download page, read 8 October 2026, lists no Click installation guide among its installation documents.[29]
  • We did not read the standards themselves, only their catalogue pages, and we do not quote limit values.[6][16]
  • We could not open the Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort registry. A UL SPOT search for Marmoleum returned Forbo entries tagged as product-specific EPDs, including Decibel and Soul, and we did not open the EPD documents there.[33]
  • Click and Soul are not named on the Blue Angel or Indoor Air Comfort certificates we read.
  • Forbo's Back to the Floor programme is described in its Marmoleum brochure and sheet EPD.[1][4]
